A visit to Tsaravets Castle in Veliko Turnovo is a must. Stroll down to the end of the main street xxxxxxx and there it is looming protectively over the old town as it has done for the last 800 Years.
The first settlement, which was built on this historical hill, dates from 4200 BC. It's development continued through the bronze and iron age, when the Thracians lived there. In V-VII century this was the location of the biggest town of the Byzantine Empire in the province Moesia Inferior. It was destroyed during the times of the Avar-Slavic invasions in VII century. In IX century an old Bulgarian settlement was formed, this grew during the time of the First Bulgarian Empire. The building of the fortress, which is preserved to the present day, began in XII century. The fortress has three entrances. The main entrance is at the western end of the hill. The Palace complex, which represents an assembly of buildings, is located in the central part. It is surrounded by an internal stone wall, two battle towers and two entrances - one at the north and one at the south. It includes a Throne hall, a Palace church and Royal rooms. The restoration of the fortress Tsarevets began in 1930 and was complete in 1981 at the celebration of 1300 years after the foundation of Bulgaria. The kings Petar, Asen, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II ruled from Tsarevets.
During the period of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, from the year 1185 to 1395, Bulgaria was the largest and the most powerful state in Southeastern Europe, and Tsarevets Hill was the main fortress of the medieval capital – Veliko Turnovo.
During the first centuries of the Roman rule the ancient settlement was deserted, but had been inhabited even as early as the 2nd millennium B.C. After the abandonment, in once again became populated during the 4th century, and by the 5th century it had already become a strongly fortified early Byzantine town. During the 12th century, the medieval fortress was raised on top of the foundations of this early Byzantine stronghold. Today there is partial restoration, although the entire fort has been well-studied. You can see how this fort was able to withstand many different periods throughout history as it consists of massive stonewalls, gates and towers. The official way to enter Tsaravets was through three huge gates which are located at the central entrance and situated on a narrow rocky isthmus. Here there was a draw-bridge, which was where the fortified King’s Palace was. An inner stonewall surrounded this area, and the Throne Hall, the Royal Church, and the royal chambers were situated behind this wall. At the top of the entire hill was the complex of the Patriarch’s Palace, which was restored in 1981 in honour of 1300 years from the creation Bulgaria and was painted in 1985 in honour of 800 years from the liberation of Vizantia. These paintings represent various moments during the history of Medieval Bulgariia
